Understanding Token ID Limitations in OPERA Cloud

A quick reference on what a Token ID is — and isn't — within OPERA Cloud once the Oracle Payment Interface (OPI) is active.

Before You Begin

  • None — this is a reference guide for understanding how tokens work once OPI is active.

What You Need to Know

  • Tokens replace the card number: Once OPI is installed, the OPERA Credit Card Vault feature swaps out the credit card number for a Token ID — only the Token ID is stored in OPERA.
  • No user has access to the real card number: With OPI activated, no user — regardless of permissions — can view the actual card number from OPERA; only the masked token and last 4 digits are visible.
  • Specific limitations are Payment Partner-dependent: Exactly how a token can be reused (for example, across properties, for chargebacks, or for recurring billing) depends on your specific Payment Service Provider's implementation.

Tips & Best Practices

  • Review business processes reliant on card numbers: Since the full card number is no longer stored, revisit any internal process (e.g. manual chargeback handling) that previously relied on having the card number on hand.
  • Confirm specifics with your Payment Partner: For details on exactly how your tokens can and can't be used, speak with your Payment Service Provider directly.
  • Need help? For token or chargeback questions, contact your Payment Service Provider.
