What to Do When You Get an “Invalid BIN” Error Scanning a Gift Card
If your Clover POS shows an “Invalid BIN” (Bank Identification Number) error when scanning a Facilipay gift card, it means the system isn’t recognising the card — usually because the wrong gift card app is being used on the device. You need the correct Facilipay Gift Cards app installed so the card’s number range is recognised and processed properly.
What “Invalid BIN” Means
Every gift card number starts with a BIN (Bank Identification Number) — the first digits that identify the card type and issuer. If the POS can’t match that BIN to a recognised issuer in its configuration, it will show an invalid BIN error. In this case, your gift card’s BIN isn’t recognised because the installed gift card app doesn’t support Facilipay card ranges.
Why This Happens
The Clover Gift Cards app provided by Clover only recognises cards issued through that system.
If you scan a Facilipay-issued gift card while the Clover Gift Cards app is active, the system won’t recognise the BIN and you’ll see the error.
Summary of the cause:
-
The BIN that identifies the Facilipay gift card isn’t recognised by the Clover app.
-
That results in an “Invalid BIN” message because the wrong app is handling the scan.
How to Fix the “Invalid BIN” Error
✅ 1. Install/Open the Correct Gift Cards App
Make sure your Clover POS has the Facilipay Gift Cards app installed and open it instead of the default Clover gift card app:
-
On your Clover home screen, open the App Market.
-
Search for and install Facilipay Gift Cards (this app recognises and works with cards you ordered through Facilipay).
-
Once installed, open the Facilipay Gift Cards app before scanning the card.
This correct app contains the BIN ranges and logic to recognise Facilipay-issued gift cards.
✅ 2. Retry the Scan in the Right App
After opening the Facilipay Gift Cards app:
-
Scan the customer’s card QR code or barcode again.
-
The application should now recognise the card number and allow balance checks, redemptions, or loads without throwing the error.
What Happens Next
Once the correct app is in use:
-
The Facilipay Gift Cards app will validate the BIN based on the card series issued by Facilipay.
-
The system will show the gift card balance (if checking) or allow redemption and balance load actions.
-
The error should no longer appear when the card is scanned in the proper app.
Tips & Best Practices
✔ Confirm You’re in the Right App: Always launch the Facilipay Gift Cards app before scanning any gift cards — this prevents the terminal from defaulting to the Clover gift card system.
✔ Train Staff: Educate your team on which app to open for Facilipay gift cards versus other tender types.
✔ Keep Apps Updated: Ensure you have the latest versions of the Facilipay Gift Cards app so BIN ranges and recognition rules stay current.
